The Fear of Being Judged

The Root of The Fear

We all have the fear of being judged to some degree. It’s universal and natural. To understand the fear, one can ask: where does the fear of being judged come from?

Our ancestors knew everyone in their small tribe or village. If you did something weird or abnormal, that could get you shunned or thrown out of the tribe. It would mean your death. Behaving “normally” has been favored by evolution. The “abnormals” were thrown out of the tribe and died out.

The Issue

The issue is, people are very different. We don’t always behave like everyone else, and in today’s world, it’s possible to survive on your own. This means that in today’s world, there’s no real need for the fear of being judged.

This fear limits you. You may even keep yourself from doing what you love, because it wouldn’t be ‘normal’ and you fear you’d be judged for it.

My experience

I love personal development, I love sharing my experiences and inspiring others, yet for a long time, the fear of being judged stopped me from doing that.

I’ve wanted to start a YouTube channel for over 5 years, and only a year ago did I finally do it. I was scared of being judged for being “too young”. Now I realize that I should’ve started earlier.

There was intense fear just before announcing the launch of my new channel to the world. I had to tell my family, my friends, and of course everyone at school. If I failed and was shunned for it, it would’ve been disastrous for my social life.

But I wasn’t shunned, quite the opposite actually. I expected people would cringe at me or judge me for starting my YouTube channel. Yet after finally starting it, all I heard was praise and support for it.

So my advice for you is…

If you have something you’re fearing to do because you think people will judge you, just do it. I guarantee you, people won’t care as much as you think.

Isn’t it worse to never have tried to do what you love? So go out there and do it, and see how it isn’t as bad as you think!
