Defining Personal Development

“Personal development” is a bit of a fluffy term. It includes a lot of different fields, such as career, finances, relationship skills, spirituality, and more. So what exactly is personal development?

According to Wikipedia, the definition of personal development is this:

Personal Development

activities that develop a person’s capabilities and potential, build human capital, facilitate employability, and enhance quality of life and the realization of dreams and aspirations.

So personal development is about the activities we do, the habits that lead to growth. For example, meditation, working out, therapy, and learning are ways of doing personal development.

The activities you do are like throwing darts against a dartboard, hoping to get points (improve your life). To be able to hit something, you’ll need to see the dartboard, which is why I want to emphasize the importance of setting goals and having a proper vision.

Setting your goals

To hit something, you need a target. If you want to change yourself, it’s critical to visualize what it is that you want to move towards. It’s critical to visualize the end result which entails how you want your life to look. Do you want to be a millionaire, do you want to be fit, do you want to have an active social life? Visualizing where you want to be is step one, after that, you can start finding ways to move towards that.

Setting the goals exercise. 1. Where are you now? Visualize what your life looks like right now. 2. Pick a field you’d like to improve. Can be relationships, career, emotions, health, and so forth. 3. Visualize how your life would look like if you improved that field. 4. Set an intention to move towards that vision

After you’ve set your goals, your vision, you’ll automatically start moving towards it. You’ll pick up the right habits without much conscious involvement. That’s the magical power of goals.
